Qualifying

Saturday, 06/06/2015, 08.30 – 09.15, Weather: Sunny, 23°C

Under the series regulations the enormous field has to be split into two groups, each of which has a 20 minute qualifying session. The fastest lap time per driver is used to set the grid for Race One and the second fastest lap time is used to set the starting positions for Race Two. The grid for Race Three is determined by the results of Race One, with the first ten finishers starting in reverse order so the winner of Race One starts from 10th, the 2nd placed driver starts 9th, and so on.

Early on Saturday morning we were greeted by a cloudless sky and it was already very warm. Both sessions ran without incident, and our drivers did a good job. Marek managed to set an excellent 5th and a 6th place in his group, Arlind achieved was 10th and 14th, Lucas was 12th and 9th, and David ended up 14th and 16th.

Race One (30 minutes)

Saturday, 06/06/2015, 14.45, Weather: Sunny, 33°C

The first race started in blazing sunshine and immediately there was a clash between Ortmann and Schumacher. Schumacher, with a damaged car, shot straight through the gravel into the tyre wall clipping Lucas’ rear tyre on the way. Lucas was able to continue with minor damage to his suspension. Schumacher was out of the car, and the Safety Car was deployed until the accident could be cleared. Our drivers were in the following positions after the restart: Marek 10th, Arlind 16th, David 22nd, Moritz 23rd, and Lucas 24th. Marek came under pressure from Drudi and had to let him past while Arlind passed the battling pair of Uitert and Preining to claim 14th. David was 20th, Lucas 21st and Moritz 23rd. An accident between Mazatis and Dienst caused the second Safety Car phase and at the restart there were numerous position changes throughout the field. Marek lost a place to Beckmann and was now 12th. During the closing laps of the race Marek finally found his rhythm and a courageous overtaking manoeuvre to outbrake Schramm in the first corner saw him regain 11th. Arlind was fighting with Ortmann and Preining after the restart and finally was passed by both of them. That meant he was 16th at the chequered flag. David and Moritz got together during the final laps and changed positions several times in a fight that included Maggi and Rogivue. At the end David and Moritz crossed the finishing line in 27th and 28th respectively.

Race Two (30 minutes)

Sunday, 07/06/2015, 12.00, Weather: Sunny, 30°C

The second race of the weekend started in the main heat of the day. Marek got away well and moved up to 8th while Lucas and David came back from the first lap in 31st and 32nd respectively after they both had trouble starting. Arlind and Moritz were up in 23rd and 24th and progressing well but the Safety Car had to be deployed while van Uitert’s car was cleared away. At the restart Marek got into a fight with Schramm, the pair of them exchanging positions several times. Marek managed to get in front and stay there and drove well to in 8th postition. Arlind was able to improve his position lap by lap, and Moritz managed to shadow him all the way. Arlind was now 19th and Moritz was 20th. Lucas battled his way up the order to 23rd, while David fought Wolf and Mazatis for ages before he was able to claim 28th place. When Mawson’s car got stuck in a dangerous position, the Safety Car had to be deployed for a second time. Marek was not ready at the restart and wasn’t fast enough and Zhou Yu, who had been handed a Drive Through penalty previously, was behind him and very eager to get back to the front. He immediately tried to get past Marek and the two tangled. Marek's tyre was damaged and he had no other option but to return to the pit lane and retire from the race. Another possible top ten finish had slipped from his grasp. A few laps later the Safety Car was deployed yet again after Preining crashed and with only a few laps were left to the end of the race the race director chose to terminate the race with the red flag, even though it could certainly have finished behind the Safety Car. The final positions were calculated at the end of the lap prior to the accident.

Race Three (30 minutes)

Sunday, 07/06/2015, 17.30, Weather: Sunny, 28°C

The start to the third race was delayed by 30 minutes and finally got underway at 6 pm on Sunday evening. The temperature was still 28°C, and the drivers had to make quite an effort to perform at their best. Shortly after the start there was a big crash which involved several cars and the field had to regroup on the grid for a fresh start. The race started behind the Safety car this time and was shortened to 15 minutes. Almost immediately there were more incidents, and finally the race had to be red flagged and stopped. At the restart Marek was 6th, Arlind 10th, Lucas 12th, Moritz 20th and David 22nd. The battles started almost immediately and Marek had to give in to Schramm and Ortmann to slip to 8th. Lucas managed to avoid all the chaos to move into 9th place. Arlind also avoided all the incidents and settled in to 12th. Moritz progressed well during the available laps to finish 14th while David finished 20th. That meant Marek collected his first two points of the season and Lucas finished the weekend with one point in his account. After the race Marek was awarded a 30 second penalty for pushing Lucas off in a dangerous manner. He lost the points he should have scored and was demoted to 29th. All our other drivers moved up the order one place.

The next race meeting in the ADAC Formula 4 series takes place in 2 weeks’ time, on the week end of 21st June 2015 at Spa-Francorchamps (B).
