Qualifying

Saturday, 04/10/14, 15.05 – 15.35, Weather: Sunny, 24°C

According to the rules there is one qualifying session of 30 minutes, with the participants split into two groups, running in consecutive sessions. The best lap time per driver makes up the grid for race one, and the second fastest lap time for each driver determines the grid for race two.

The sun was shining and conditions were very good, but Marek was at a disadvantage on this new circuit because an engine change meant he was unable to get many laps in free practice. He improved enormously in qualifying and was able to claim 10th place on the grid for race one and 14th for race two.

Race One (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Sunday, 05/10/14, 10.50, Weather: Sunny, 25°C

The start of the first race went well and the massive field went on its way in beautiful sunshine. Marek gained two places right at the start and was up to 18th. Gachet, who was several places ahead of him, made a mistake and drop back just behind Marek, which put Marek 17th. Bosak, Rump and Marek spent the rest of the race in a continuous battle for positions. When Rump tried to overtake Bosak and left his braking too late Marek slipped past Rump. Several laps later Rump tried an attack on Marek that was never going to end well. He spun past Marek and lost several places, and Marek saw him coming and was able to leave enough space to avoid contact. Gachet was able to profit from that and slipped past Marek, putting him 17th again, which was where he finished. Because eight Wild Card drivers were in front of him, and were not eligible for points, Marek was awarded 2 points for his efforts and was classified 9th.

Race Two (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Sunday, 05/10/14, 15.00, Weather: Sunny, 27°C

There were several incidents at the start both among the front runners and further back and the Safety Car had to be deployed immediately. It took several laps for the damaged cars to be cleared away. Marek’s car unfortunately also sustained some damage, but he was able to drive back to the pitlane, where his car’s nose had to be changed. Marek slotted back in at the back of the field and at the restart he was in 26th place. He managed to improve his position lap after lap and after a good recovery he took the chequered flag in 22nd.

And now the 2014 ALPS championship is history. The champion was already crowned before this meeting in the shape of Nyck de Vries (NL). Now the other final positions were decided with Charles Leclerc (F) in 2nd and 3rd going to Matevos Isaakyan (RUS).
