Marek Boeckmann (D)

Boeckmann in the points at Mugello

The sixth of seven events in the Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS championship took place at the demanding Mugello circuit, out in the Tuscan hills. 32 drivers entered this meeting, all very eager to race again after the two month long summer break. 10 of the 32 drivers were from other championships, looking to train for their next official race, and these 10 drivers were thus not eligible to score points at this meeting.
The races can be followed via live stream on the official website.

Qualifying

Saturday, 06/09/14, 10.15 – 11.20, Weather: Sunny, 24°C

According to the rules there is one qualifying session of 30 minutes, with the participants split into two groups, running in consecutive sessions. The best lap time per driver makes up the grid for race one, and the second fastest lap time for each driver determines the grid for race two.

Marek started in group A, which meant he was out with the second group. He was doing well and was up to 8th place when the session was red flagged and stopped. After the restarted Mar managed to improve his lap times further, but could not get the necessary improvements in the closing minutes, which meant he would start Race One from 12th on the grid, and was in a good 10th place on the grid for Race Two.

Race One (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 06/09/14, 17.10, Weather: Sunny, 27°C

The sun was shining and it was extremely hot. Marek made a good start, but a few corners in Romanov left his braking too late and pushed Marek off. To avoid a more serious incident Marek had to hobble over the grass and through the gravel. Fortunately he was able to get back on track and could continue the race. Of course lots of cars had been able to get past him during the incident and he found himself almost at the back of the field. In a courageous drive he managed to claim back place after place, and setting some good times in a fortunately undamaged car, he was able to cross the finish line in 23rd.

Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS Championship

Race Two (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Sunday, 07/09/14, 13.30, Weather: Cloudy, 27°C

Marek again started well and held his 19th place before managing to overtake Romanov. As the race developed he overtook one after another, starting with Evstigneev, then Aitken and Li Ye. Then Riener got a corner wrong, and things got a bit hairy for Marek when he touched with Li Ye, who was trying to take advantage of the incident. Marek’s front wing was damaged, but he was able to continue in 15th back behind Riener. The car’s handling was now a bit off, and Marek had to fight hard to keep Evstigneev behind him. When rain started falling on one side of this long circuit 23 minutes in, several cars slid off and the race director immediately decided to red flag and stop the race. That meant Marek held his position and, because of that, and once all the invitation class drivers were removed from the results, he scored the last point on offer.

The next (and final) race weekend of the ALPS championship will take place in one month’s time, on 4th/5th October at Jerez (E).
