Boeckmann collects points at Spa

The fourth of seven events in the Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS championship was held at the legendary GP circuit at Spa-Francorchamps (B). 32 drivers entered this meeting and for a number of reasons Marek Boeckmann was the only driver in our team.
The races can be followed via live stream on the official website.

Qualifying

Friday, 06/06/14, 16.45 – 17.50, Weather: Sunny, 25°C

According to the rules there is one qualifying session of 30 minutes, with the participants split into two groups, running in consecutive sessions. The best lap time per driver makes up the grid for race one, and the second fastest lap time for each driver determines the grid for race two.
After a free practice in the morning, the qualification sessions were run the same day in the afternoon. Marek ran with the second group and found the ultra long and demanding track very challenging. He tried his best, but somehow none of his laps were ideal, and then the session was interrupted by a red flag, which disrupted his rhythm further. Marek ended up 13th in his group in the end.

Race One (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 07/06/14, 11.15, Weather: Cloudy, 22°C

Today the weather was equally nice and warm. Marek, who started the race from 23rd, made a good start but several incidents in the early stages meant the Safety Car had to be deployed. Two laps later the restart came and Marek made a good job of it, avoiding all accidents and quickly moving up to 14th place. This circuit may not be very forgiving in qualifying, but it clearly offers advantages in the race to the brave driver. It certainly offers several good spots for overtaking, and Marek was able to use these to his advantage, battling his way through to 11th. Towards the end of the race several more cars became stranded and had to be cleared away, meaning the Safety Car had to take charge once more. Exactly one lap of the race remained when the restart was given again leaving Marek to defend his position and cross the finishing line in a good 11th place, just missing out on points.
After the race penalties were awarded to three drivers, which promoted Marek and moved him to 10th place.

Race Two (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Sunday, 07/06/14, 10.30, Weather: Cloudy, 20°C

Shortly before the race it looked as if it would start raining, but as the cars lined up on the grid, the sun reappeared. This time the first lap went alright, with no need to deploy the Safety Car. Marek, who had started from 20th, didn’t make a very good start and promptly lost a place. He was quickly able to make up some positions, and made good progress to claim 18th. That saw him fighting for positions with Korneev. Under braking Korneev didn’t leave him much room and Marek went off track, and into a spin. When he was finally able to slot back in, pretty much all of the field had gone past. Marek was able to continue the race but was only able to recover as far as 24th by the chequered flag.

The next race weekend of the ALPS championship is in four weeks, on 6th July at Monza (I).
