Qualifying

Saturday, 07/06/13, 09.40 – 10.45, Weather: Sunny, 23°C

According to the rules there is one qualifying session of 30 minutes, with the participants split into two groups, running in consecutive sessions. The best lap time per driver makes up the grid for race one, and the second fastest lap time for each driver determines the grid for race two.

Kevin and Andrew started in the first group and Andrew was in 3rd place for a long time, but in the closing moments Chudleigh snatched it away from him, which left Andrew 4th on the grid for Race One. For Race Two, Andrew claimed a good 3rd place in his group. Kevin didn’t manage an optimal lap, but it was enough to put him 6th for Race One. Because Ramsay was carrying over a penalty from the last race weekend, Kevin moved up a place on the grid. For Race Two Kevin found himself in 7th in his group.

Qualifying Results Group A & Grid for Race One

Denis set off very fast and promptly went off the line in the Parabolica, ended in an accident. The car was heavily damaged, although the driver was fine. Denis hadn’t even set a lap time, but the officials allowed him to the start both races, albeit from the back row. Orudzhev, who was fastest in the session, also had a penalty from the last race so that put Bonifacio fastest in this group for the grid of Race One.

Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS Championship

Race One (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 06/07/13, 17.45, Weather: Sunny, 30°C

The temperature was high for the start of the first race and as always it was hard work just getting through the first chicane. This time Andrew was involved in an accident and got stuck with a damaged car, while Kevin was able to avoid the chaos, but lost a few places. Denis was also able to get round the accident and made up several positions before the Safety Car had to take over the field while the debris was cleaned away. At the restart Kevin managed to overtake two of his fellow competitors by slipstreaming past them. Thus freed to race, he put in a strong chase for places and worked his way forward lap after lap, taking the chequered flag in a very good 7th place. Denis was involved in some tough fighting and was already up to 20th. He battled it out in a group of four and managed to work his way to the front of this group. With some smart slipstreaming he made up even more places and crossed the finishing line in a handy 16th place.

Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS Championship

Race 2 (25 Minutes + 1 Lap)

Sunday, 07/07/13, 14.40, Weather: Sunny, 30°C

The start took place in the main heat of the day and there were several incidents at the chicane, so the Safety Car had to be deployed. Andrew got through cleanly and was in 4th place, Kevin was 10th and Denis was already up to 20th. It took a while to clear the damaged cars away so on lap four the Safety Car turned off the lights, which was everyone noted, and most drivers not unreasonably believed that the restart would be given. The Safety Car didn’t come in, and suddenly its lights were on again. Several drivers near the front, who had already started to race, had to brake, which ended in a midfield collision. Kevin couldn’t avoid the accident and crashed heavily right in front of us. When the restart was finally given, Andrew and Denis both lost places but were able to continue racing. Andrew crossed the finish line in 12th. Denis, who had made up positions and was behind Andrew, was fighting for position with Chudleigh but it didn’t work out and he crashed on the last lap, ending up classified 21st.
After the race a few penalties were handed out: Orudzhev 25 sec because of not respecting the Saftety Car procedure, Dalewski 10 sec because of dangerous overtaking Tereshchenko 25 sec because of overtaking Andrew Tang under yellow. With that the classification changed as follows:

The next race weekend of the ALPS championship is in three weeks time, starting on 27th July in Misano (I).
