Good performance from Joerg at Mugello

The sixth of seven events in the Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS championship took place at the demanding Mugello circuit, out in the Tuscan hills. 29 drivers entered this event.
The races are part of the well known Peroni Race Program and can be followed via live stream on the official website.

Qualifying

Saturday, 07/09/13, 10.15 – 11.20, Weather: Sunny, 27°C

According to the rules there is one qualifying session of 30 minutes, with the participants split into two groups, running in consecutive sessions. The best lap time per driver makes up the grid for race one, and the second fastest lap time for each driver determines the grid for race two.

There was not a cloud to be seen and temperatures were already high in the morning. Kevin was running well and got himself up to 4th place for the grid of race one and an excellent 2nd place for race two in his group. Denis finished 9th on the grid for both races in his group.

Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS Championship

Race One (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 07/09/13, 17.05, Weather: Sunny, 31°C

The first start after the long summer break went well and the big field got moving without any major problems. Kevin, who started from 7th, made a good start but Orudzhev managed to squeeze past him on the first lap. That put Kevin 8th. He worked his way back onto Orudzhev’s tail but he wasn’t able to find a way past and had to settle for finishing in a decent 8th after a trouble free race. Denis had an adventurous start and had passed several cars when he got on the grass. He managed to slot back in in 14th and was able to hold his place despite Villemi following him closely and putting pressure on him throughout the race. Just when it looked as if he would make it to the finish line in that position he lost concentration briefly – or maybe he was just watching his mirrors too much – and Villemi went past. That meant Denis finished the race in 15th. Andrew got sandwiched at the start and lost a few positions, started to try and claw his way back, but then outbraked himself and went off track. He was lucky to be able to drive through the gravel and continue the race, making up a few places and finishing the race in 23rd.

Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS Championship

Race 2 (25 Minutes + 1 Lap)

Sunday, 08/09/13, 13.40, Weather: Overcast, 26°C

The start was very lively but it only took a few corners for the final classification to become clear. Fuoco led De Vries, Gasly and Kevin. Right behind them were Ghiotto, Vermont and Bonifacio. We knew Andrew had jumped the start, and therefore was not really enjoying his 13th place. Very soon the message appeared on the screen that he was being handed a Drive Through penalty. He served this on the next lap and rejoined in 22nd place. Denis started well and gained a few places. He was up in 16th place, and then, after Andrew’s penalty, in 15th. This time round he was right behind Villemi, until Villemi managed to overtake Ramsay. That left Denis to chase Ramsay, but he couldn’t get close enough to launch an attack on this sinuous track. Denis came home in a steady 15th. Kevin had an excellent race. Each lap he and Ghiotto were fighting for tenths of a second with Ghiotto gettng dangerously close on the straights, but Kevin gave it everything and managed to keep Ghiotto behind until the very end. He was very happy to cross the finish line in a great 4th place.

The next and final race weekend of the ALPS championship is in four weeks time, starting on 4th October in Imola (I).
