Qualifying for Race One

Saturday, 19/10/13, 08.55 – 09.30, Weather: Cloudy, 18°C

According to the rules there is one qualifying session of 15 minutes for each race, with the participants split into two groups, running in consecutive sessions. There were a total of 34 drivers on the entry list.

Kevin and Marcos were in the first group and Kevin settled in to a good rhythm right from the start, finishing the session in a fantastic 5th place, his best qualifying result in the Eurocup this season. Marcos pushed very hard in qualifying as always and started lapping more consistently towards the end of the session which earned him 11th place.

Levin was in the second group. He also set some very good lap times, but failed to capitalise on that in the final three laps. Despite this he still finished the session in a very good 8th place in his group.

Race One (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 19/10/13, 12.45, Weather: Sunny, 22°C

The penultimate race of the season was action packed from the start, with Gasly and Rowland, who were both still in contention to win the championship, were pushing hard but de Vries was clearly the fastest driver in the race. Behind them there was more action, with yellow warning flags deployed on three different corners at once in one instance, through surprisingly the Safety Car was not required. Kevin got sandwiched at the start, and Vermont, Bonifacio and Ghiotto all slipped past him, putting him 13th.

During the race he managed to maintain the same pace as the top ten, and when those three drivers were involved in accidents later on, Kevin moved back up again. On the very last lap he also managed to take a place from Jones, which meant that Kevin crossed the finish line in an excellent 9th place. This was his best result in the Eurocup and he was rewarded with two points. Levin came round at the end of the first lap in 17th and Marcos, who had gained a few places, was immediately behind him in 18th. During the fast paced race Marcos stayed close to Levin, and they were able to avoid all accidents together. Steadily they improved their positions, first to 15th and 16th, then to 12th and 13th finally crossing the line in a very good 11th (Levin) and 12th (Marcos). We were now optimistically looking forward to the last race of the season.

Qualifying for Race Two

Sunday, 20/10/13, 10.35 – 11.10, Weather: Foggy, 18°C

There was thick fog in the morning, which meant the start of the session was slightly delayed. The two groups started in reverse order this morning, so Levin was out first. He drove well and improved steadily, but all in all was probably a bit too cautious, finishing 14th in his group.
Kevin managed to get in a fast lap shortly before the end of the session after a slow lap. That secured 6th place in his group. Marcos started well and improved to begin with, but his final two laps saw him unable to improve further, leaving him to start from 13th.

Formula Renault 2.0 EUROCUP

Race 2 (25 Minutes + 1 Lap)

Sunday, 20/10/13, 14.45, Weather: Sunny, 25°C

The last race of the season was run in beautiful sunshine. Kevin got away well and was disputing 9th place with Tunjo, when several other cars came flying into them from behind. In a chain reaction they crashed and managed to take Kevin out as well. The rear suspension of Kevin’s car was badly damaged bringing his race to a premature end. Unfortunately it was no comfort to him that Bonifacio and Bailly were off as well. There were a number of other incidents as well, and the Safety Car had to be deployed the race being neutralised for several laps. At the restart Marcos was 19th and Levin was 21st. Marcos got into a long running fight with Silva and finally lost a place. Shortly afterwards Levin managed to get past Marcos putting them 17th and 18th respectively, where they stayed for a number of laps. Shortly before the end Aitken and Franzoni dropped back, promoting Levin to 15th and Marcos to 16th in a very fast-paced race.

Rowland pushed Gasly off at the start and was handed a drive through penalty for this actions. That dropped him to the back of the field and Gasly, who then improved from 10th to 6th place, was able to enjoy the knowledge that this was now his title.
