Qualifying for Race One

Friday, 13/09/13, 17.55 – 18.30, Weather: Overcast, 15°C

According to the rules there is one qualifying session of 15 minutes for each race, with the participants split into two groups, running in consecutive sessions.
It was not an easy task for our drivers to perform well on this demanding track after the long summer break – the time Marcos and Levin both raced was back in July (20th/21st) at the RedBullRing.

Marcos started in the first group and set several good laps, but right at the end of the session he was unable to improve any further which left him in 15th in his group.
Kevin and Levin both ran very well in the second group, with Kevin claiming 7th and Levin 10th in this group.

Race One (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 14/09/13, 11.25, Weather: Rain, 12°C

It had been raining heavily all morning and the temperature had dropped, leaving very fresh conditions for everyone to contend with. The rain eased a little while we were on the grid, but then it started again and didn’t stop for the rest of the race. The track was flooded in places and there was a lot of aquaplaning but the race still started, albeit behind the Safety Car, which led the field for three laps. Everyone was pretty cautious when the Safety Car finally came in and lap times were a good 25 seconds slower than in qualifying! Kevin made up a place at the start and then defended his position for the remainder of the race. There were a few position changes, but Kevin kept cool and came home in 12th, happy to see the finish line. Levin quickly made up a few places, but then got hit going into the chicane. He spun and lost several places but was able to rejoin just in front of Marcos.
Marcos had a few off track moments but nevertheless made up places and was in 25th when Levin came back on. The pair stayed in line astern for several laps. The track was not drying at all and it was really difficult to stay on track with so much spray about. A few laps before the end Levin ran wide in one of the corners and Marcos was through. Levin lost momentum then which let Gachet and Albon through a well. Marcos took the chequered flag in 18th and Levin finished 21st.

Qualifying for Race Two

Sunday, 15/09/13, 10.45 – 11.20, Weather: Sunny, 18°C

On Sunday morning the sun was shining and temperatures began to rise again. Plenty of spectators had now found the way to the race track.
Kevin and Levin managed to claim 11th and 12th place respectively in their group, both of them complaining of lack of grip in the current conditions.
Marcos was initially fastest overall – but it was clear that he was pushing too hard too soon and he finally ended up 14th in his group.

Formula Renault 2.0 EUROCUP

Race 2 (25 Minutes + 1 Lap)

Sunday, 15/09/13, 16.20, Weather: Cloudy, 21°C

There were a few clouds in the afternoon, but it stayed dry and the start of the race happened as scheduled. Normally it is quite difficult to overtake on this fluid track, and it was no different this time. Most changes happened at the start, and afterwards not many were willing or able to risk trying it. With the field setting a fast pace the order was more or less fixed. Levin got away well and made up a few places, and was 22nd at the end of the first lap. Kevin dropped back a little and was 24th, with Marcos following in 27th. During the race Kevin and Pakari had a fierce fight, changing places several times, but towards the end Kevin suffered a gearbox problem and was unable to down shift any more. He managed to drive back to the pit lane in one gear, and his race ended prematurely. Marcos drove a steady race and moved up a few places, taking the chequered flag in 24th. Levin drove well and held 21st place throughout the race, setting good lap times, and on the final lap was able to attack Bailly; Bailly shut the door though and Levin spun on the dirty track, crashing rear end first into the tyre wall. He was classified 30th.

The next race weekend of the EUROCUP is in only two weeks, starting 27th September at Paul Ricard Circuit in the south of France.
