The third of seven World Series by Renault Weekends of the 2013 season was held on the interesting circuit near Moscow (RUS), newly opened in 2102. As ever, the WSR weekend offered plenty of attractions both on and off the track and as usual plenty of spectators turned up to enjoy it all.

Qualifying for Race One

Saturday, 22/06/13, 10.40 – 11.15, Weather: Sunny, 15°C

According to the rules there is one qualifying session of 15 minutes for each race, with the participants split into two groups, running in consecutive sessions. A total of 35 drivers turned up to accept the challenge. For our team Denis Korneev (RUS) took part in his home race in place of Marcos Siebert (ARG):

In free practice on Friday our drivers were getting used to the circuit which was new to all of them. If you put the first sector best times from Levin, and the other two sector best times from Kevin together, then our drivers were running very well. However, all three of them needed time to suss out the technically tricky circuit. It showed was soon very clearly that the more experienced drivers had a distinct advantage over the rookies.
In qualifying Kevin and Levin ran in the first group, and both of them would have liked to take longer than the allocated 15 minutes to set a good lap time. However, Kevin was able to achieve 10th place and Levin was 18^th in his group.
Denis ran in the second group and he too set his best time on his very last lap, which moved him to 16^th in his group.

Race One (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 22/06/13, 15.40, Weather: Cloudy, 18°C

The sky clouded over, but at least it stayed dry. From previous experience nobody was expecting much in the way of overtaking manoeuvres on this circuit, and thus a good start was very important. The start was clean and Kevin managed to improve a place during the first lap, to put him 18^th. Levin overtook Denis at the start which meant they were 34^th and 35^th respectively. Bosak and Roussel made mistakes and Levin was able to pass both of them, and when Silva and Kanamaru both fell back, Levin was promoted to 29^th and Denis to 32^nd. Kevin held his position in his group, but he was unable to make any progress until Panis and d’Agosto were handed drive through penalties for jumping the start, which moved Kevin to 16th, a place he defended all the way to the finishing line. Levin and Denis also drove error free races and came home 29^th and 32^nd respecitvely. Because Mavlanov failed to serve a drive through penalty during the race, he was later excluded from the results, which moved Levin and Denis a place up on the final results list.

Qualifying for Race Two

Sunday, 23/06/13, 10.45 – 11.20, Weather: Cloudy, 13°C

On Sunday morning it was a little cooler and the track was much faster. Denis, who had to start first today, was doing very well, setting his personal best lap time of the weekend, which put him 16^th in his group.
Kevin and Levin started well and improved steadily but the times were incredibly tight, with 16 cars within a second of the best lap time. Levin finished 13^th and Kevin was 16^th in their group.

Race 2 (25 Minutes + 1 Lap)

Sunday, 23/06/13, 16.00, Weather: Cloudy, 21°C

The second race on the Moscow Raceway started with trouble when Rowland and Gasly clashed and Gasly spun off. He came back onto the track without looking, just as Denis drove past. Gasly hit Denis, and although Denis made it back to the pitlane, his nose was damaged and he was forced to retire. The Safety Car had to be deployed while Gasly’s car was cleaned away.
Levin made a good start and had gained several places and after the restart he was already 23^rd. He kept pushing and his lap times just got better and better, but then he spun out and got stuck in the gravel trap. This was really bad news! Kevin was doing well and climbed up the order a place at a time, making no mistakes. He managed to get as far as 24^th, but in such a big field, with everyone setting very similar lap times, it was difficult to create overtaking opportunities. Kevin didn’t take any chances and brought his car safely home.

The next race weekend of the EUROCUP will be in four weeks’ time, starting 19^th July at the RedBullRing in Austria.
