Qualifying for Race One

Saturday, 27/04/13, 09.00 – 09.35, Weather: Overcast, 4°C

According to the rules there is one qualifying session of 15 minutes for each race, with the participants split into two groups, running in consecutive sessions.

Free practice on Friday was run in cool, rainy conditions, but on Saturday morning, shortly before qualifying was due to start, the rain finally stopped. Unfortunately it was still far too cold for the track to dry quickly, so everyone was in for a tough challenge and would have to try and set a good lap time in the very short sessions.
Marcos started in the first group. He tried his best, but in the middle sector he went off track several times and ended up losing a lot of time, finishing up 17th in his group. Kevin and Levin were in the second group, and conditions hadn’t improved much. They both managed to get through the session without mistakes though with Kevin ending up in 11th place and Levin 14th in their group.

Race One (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 27/04/13, 13.15, Weather: Cloudy, 11°C

A cold wind was blowing, but it was dry and the sun was occasionally glimpsed between the clouds. The start went well, and the 37 strong field made it through the first few corners without any major incidents. Kevin got away well, but then got sandwiched in the pack and had to ease off, losing places as a result. During the race he reclaimed some of the positions and in his first race in a new category finished 25th. Levin got a good start as well and had already made up a place when he accidentally hit the pitlane speed limiter button going into a corner, costing him momentum and several positions. He managed to move up the order lap by lap, but then an overtaking manoeuvre went wrong, and he touched another car, damaging his front wing, and forcing him out of the race. Marcos started well, and in his very first race in Europe he managed to improve his position steadily, coming home in 30th position and with no damage.

Formula Renault 2.0 EUROCUP

Race 2 (25 Minutes + 1 Lap)

Sunday, 28/04/13, 16.00, Weather: Rain, 5°C

It was raining hard, and as a result the officials opted to start the race behind the Safety Car. The spray was appalling, and the drivers could see next to nothing, but after two laps the Safety Car pulled in and the race went live. Luckily pretty much everyone seemed to have the same aim, which was to reach the finishing line safely and not have an accident. Of course there were several spins, but fortunately no big crashes, and our drivers fought bravely in the midfield, Kevin even managing to improve his position by the end. Levin was able to continue after a spin, but Marcos had to abandon ship after he slipped off track and got stuck in the gravel trap. Luckily there was not much damage overall and we very much hope that conditions will be better at the next meeting.

The next race weekend of the EUROCUP will be in one month‘s time, starting on 31st May at Spa-Francorchamps (B).
