Qualifying for Race One

Friday, 27/09/13, 18.35 – 19.10, Weather: Sunny, 20°C

According to the rules there is one qualifying session of 15 minutes for each race, with the participants split into two groups, running in consecutive sessions.
There were a total of 37 drivers on the entry list and Kevin and Marcos were in the first group. They did very well and were classified 10th and 13th respectively.
Levin was in the second group and drove very well, until, on what would have been one of his last laps the fire extinguisher went off unexpectedly! That spoiled what would have been his fastest lap, and robbed him of the chance of any further improvements. Despite that he ended up in a good 9th place in his group.

Race One (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 28/09/13, 12.20, Weather: Cloudy, 22°C

The start came shortly after noon, and immediately there were several incidents which meant the Safety Car had to be deployed. Levin made a good start and was up in 14th place. At the restart Albon pulled alongside him and then ran up over his rear wheel, damaging Levin’s car. Levin was able to drive back to the pitlane, but there he had to retire. At the start Marcos had shot up to 21st, and Kevin was 23rd. At the restart Kevin closed in on Marcos, and was soon able to overtake him. There was some wild driving in this race, with many changes of position and a number of incidents as a result. After a hard race Kevin crossed the finish line in 17th and Marcos brought his car home in 20th place.

Formula Renault 2.0 EUROCUP

Race 2 (25 Minutes + 1 Lap)

Sunday, 29/09/13, 14.15, Weather: Cloudy, 21°C

A heavy downpour at lunchtime left the track flooded, and the Megane Trophy Race had to be cancelled. Then the rain stopped and strong winds drove the clouds away. The start of the FR2.0 race took place as scheduled, although parts of the still wet track were plagued with massive puddles. Most of the drivers still opted for slick tyres. Kevin, who started well, was hit from behind and spun out of the race with a damaged car. At the front several cars went off track and had to slot back on towards the rear of the field. Marcos, who was one of the few on rain tyres, was able to get through the first lap without being involved in any accident, and soon found himself in 6th. Levin, who had opted for slicks, also managed to keep on track without incident and was already up in 10th place, though everyone’s lap times were still a good 20 seconds slower than in the morning. Marcos fought hard, and was even up to 4th for several laps, because Gasly and Ocon had fallen back. Levin went wide on lap three and fell back to 13th. He set about trying to get the positions back, but again ended up aquaplaning, and he found himself in 30th place after a spin. He was able to work his way up again to 26th by the end of the race. A few laps before the end the track really started to dry, and soon lap times were about ten seconds quicker. Ocon moved back up and Gasly followed, while Marcos fell back to 7th. The slick tyres were now clearly the better choice, and he lost a handful more places, crossing the finishing line after a very exciting race in an excellent 11th place. Because Parry, who finished 7th, had started as a Wild Card, he was not awarded any points, and therefore it was Marcos who scored the last available point!

The next race weekend of the EUROCUP is in three weeks time, starting 18th October at Barcelona’s Catalunya GP Circuit.

Results Race Two
1st Esteban Ocon (F) ART 28:38.398
2nd Jake Dennis (GB) Fortec Gap 0.430
3rd Oliver Rowland (GB) Manor Gap 15.064
11th Marcos Siebert (ARG) Jenzer Motorsport
26th Levin Amweg (CH) Jenzer Motorsport
DNF: Kevin Joerg (CH) Jenzer Motorsport
