Qualifying

Saturday, 24/05/14, 10.15 – 11.20, Weather: Sunny, 20°C

According to the rules there is one qualifying session of 30 minutes, with the participants split into two groups, running in consecutive sessions. The best lap time per driver makes up the grid for race one, and the second fastest lap time for each driver determines the grid for race two.
The sun was shining, and conditions were ideal. Boeckmann and Korneev were in the first group and the field was very close. After new tyres were fitted, the hunt for fast lap times restarted. Marek was 3rd for a long time, but in the final minutes of the session was demoted to 5th. Denis had a similar experience and was 11th in his group in the end.
Immediately after them the second group with Anoschin took to the track. It was the same here, the drivers fighting it out into the final minutes of the session. Anoschin ended up 11th in his group. Several penalties were handed out after qualifying, mostly for not respecting track limits. As a result Isaakyan would start from pole position.

Race One (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 24/05/14, 16.40, Weather: Sunny, 25°C

The race was about to start, but the start was aborted because there was a car stalled on the grid. When the grid reformed they were able to get away cleanly. Boeckmann was 13th at the end of the first lap, with Korneev 17th and Anoschin 19th. Korneev wanted to make up places immediately and tried to attack in the first corner, attempting to go up the inside, but it all went wrong. He spun and unfortunately then collided with another car putting both of them out of the race. The Safety Car took the field over until the debris was cleaned away. At the restart Boeckmann was 12th and Anoschin was in 18th place. Both were able to defend their positions for the remainder of the race. Boeckmann almost made it into the points, and was hopeful of his chances on Sunday when he would start from 6th on the grid for the second race.

Race Two (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Sunday, 25/05/14, 13.00, Weather: Cloudy, 18°C

Boeckmann didn’t make the best of starts and lost several places, but managed to work his way forward again from 13th and was 10th by the middle of the race. This meant he was in the points and who knows, maybe more might have been possible had he not shortly afterwards been called in for a Drive Through penalty for not respecting track limits. He was certainly not the only one who was guilty of this offence. After serving the penalty he found himself at the back of the field. He recovered to 16th by the end of the race. Anoschin and Korneev both started well and made up several positions and were soon 16th and 17th respectively, but then Anoschin ran wide and Korneev and Nandy managed to slip past him. At the end of the race Korneev was up to 11th and therefore just outside the points. Anoschin finished the race in 13th and Boeckmann in 16th. Despite this our drivers set some of the most competitive lap times in the race, Boeckmann losing a mere two tenths compared to the fastest lap time in the field.

The next race weekend of the ALPS championship is in two week‘s time, on 8th June at Spa-Francorchamps (B).
