Qualifying

Saturday, 10/05/14, 12.10 – 13.15, Weather: Cloudy, 20°C

According to the rules there is one qualifying session of 30 minutes, with the participants split into two groups, running in consecutive sessions. The best lap time per driver makes up the grid for race one, and the second fastest lap time for each driver determines the grid for race two.
After only one free practice session on Friday afternoon the qualifying was scheduled to take place on Saturday morning but the start of the session was delayed by 2.5 hours because of several incidents in other series. Our drivers nevertheless tried to make the best of the situation. They all started well enough, but none of them were able to improve as much as they should with the new tyres. They will all start close together in the midfield.

Race One (25 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 10/05/14, 16.40, Weather: Cloudy, 20°C

After a long wait the start of the race was finally upon us. The narrow track doesn’t leave the drivers many possibilities for overtaking manoeuvres so everybody tried to make up places immediately after the start. Korneev was able to make up several places and was 16th with Anoschin just behind him in 17th and Boeckmann, who had lost out at the start, in 19th. After a few laps Anoschin tried to overtake Korneev on the inside at the end of the straight, but it went wrong. Anoschin spun off in front of Korneev and was only able to slot in again at the back of the field while Korneev lost two places. After the race Anoschin was handed a penalty putting him back four places on the grid for the Sunday race for this manoeuvre. Boeckmann was in front of Korneev now and was 16th for a long time, until he got on the kerbs a little too much, went off and couldn’t avoid contact with the barriers. Anoschin crossed the finishing line in 22nd. Korneev managed some good lap times during the race and as a reward took the chequered flag in 15th, the best placed of the team’s drivers.

Race 2 (25 Minutes + 1 Lap)

Sunday, 11/05/14, 09.25, Weather: Rain, 8°C

The race started behind the Safety Car, because the track was wet and it was still raining. The Safety Car led the field for two laps on the smeary, slippery track. There were Incidents right from the start but because the officials are very effective in cleaning away damaged cars, the dangerous situations were dealt with by the use of yellow flags. Boeckman started 17th and was soon 15th but his race did not last long. In one corner he missed the optimal line and because the run off zones are very small here his mistake was enough to put him in the tyre wall. Anoschin was directly behind him, and was now running in 14th place. He managed to improve his position steadily. When he was up to 9th two cars collided directly in front of him and he had no chance of avoiding them. His car was damaged in front (the front wing) and back (suspension), but he stayed out for two more laps until the race director showed him the black and orange flag, and he made his way back to the pits, where he had to retire from the race. Korneev started well and made up places lap after lap, driving very steadily and avoiding any accidents. He reached the finishing line in a good 9th place and collected important points for the championship.

The next race weekend of the ALPS championship is in two week‘s time, on 25th May at the RedBull Ring (A).
