Weather influences Spa result
The 2020 FIA F3 met up for their seventh race event of a total of nine as part of the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix 2020 program on the legendary Spa-Francorchamps (B) circuit. Spa is one of the most challenging venues on the calendar, and is one where good overtaking is to be expected.
Race One Qualifying
Friday, 28/08/20, 14.05 – 14.35, Weather: Overcast, 18°C
In free practice on Friday morning, Federico reached the promising 15th place, Calan was 20th and Matteo, who was driving here for the first time, was 29th.
Our drivers started the qualifying session which followed not much later with good hopes. But after a short time Belov drove into the barriers and the session was stopped with a red flag. It took a long time before it was possible to drive again. Only 9 drivers had managed a timed lap before the session was stopped, all others, including our drivers, had just started their first flying lap. When the session go underway again, there was a short, heavy downpour. Nobody knew whether it would dry out enough to drive out again with slicks or whether rain tires should be fitted. In any case, it was not possible to improve the lap times that were set at the beginning. So everyone did their best, but the good result we wanted was not possible. Matteo reached 14th, Federico 17th and Calan 21st position.

Race One (40 Minutes)
Saturday, 29/08/20, 10.25, Weather: Overcast, 14°C
It was very cool on Saturday morning and the track was a bit damp in places. Matteo held 14th place safely over long laps. Later he was closing in on Peroni, and in the end managed to overtake him. Matteo finished in a good 13th place. Federico made up one position on the first lap. He later overtook Fraga and was now 15th. Towards the end of the race his tires started to wear out and he could not keep Hauger behind, and then Calan was able to pass him, too. In the end, Federico reached the finish in 18th place. Calan had overtaken Das after a few laps and then held 17th position for a long time. Towards the end he managed to improve his position further and he finished in 16th place. All of our drivers brought their race cars safely to the finish line after a smooth, very fast race.
The grid for the second race of the weekend was set by reversing the order of the first eight finishers in the first race, with the rest of the places set according to finishing order in the first race.

Race Two (40 Minutes)
Sunday, 30/08/20, 09.45, Weather: Overcast, 18°C
It was cool on Sunday morning, but the track was dry. Calan had a contact with Hauger right after the start and had to drive into the pit lane to have a new front wing fitted. After that, Calan was able to complete the race, but although Hauger received a time penalty for his action, a good result was no longer possible for Calan. He reached the finishing line in 25th place. Matteo got off to a good start and drove in 13th position. In the second lap, he clashed with Doohan, which meant a broken front wing for Matteo and a flat tire for Doohan. Matteo also finished the race after having new parts mounted in the pit lane. He reached the checkered flag in 26th place. Federico was hit by Belov and spun. He fell far back, but managed to work his way up to 20th place with a few courageous overtaking maneuvers. On the last lap he collided with Das, and Das fell back as a consequence. Federico received a time penalty for his action, which put him back in 24th place.
We look forward to the next race which will be held in just one week’s time at Monza (I).
