Carrara wins, Edgar best Rookie at RedBull Ring
The fourth of seven racing events in the Italian FIA Formula 4 Championship took place at the interestingly challenging RedBull Ring near Zeltweg in Austria. After participating in the German F4 ADAC Championship race here in June, we were back with high expectations. The races can be watched live on sporttube tv. (see website).
Qualifying
Saturday, 13/07/19, 11.20 – 12.00, Weather: Overcast, 16°C
The rules allow for two qualifying sessions of 15 minutes, with a 10-minute break in between. The Qualifying 1 times determine the grid for Race 1 and the times from Qualifying 2 determine the grid for Race 2. The starting order for Race 3 is based on the second best lap time of each driver in either of the two qualifying sessions.
The first session went according to plan, but the second session was suspended before it was less than half complete. Because of the rule requiring no engines be run between noon and 1 pm we couldn't restart! The cars stayed in the pitlane, and at 1:02 pm the second qualifying session restarted to complete the remaining 8 minutes! Our drivers did their best.

Race One (30 minutes + 1 lap)
Saturday, 13/07/19, 17.55, Weather: Overcast, 18°C
The first race started very late in the afternoon. The first lap was wild with accidents occurring in two different places and the Safety Car had to be deployed. Giorgio, who was 3rd at the time, had also had an excursion into the gravel, but he was able to continue though he had of course lost a lot of places. Giorgio started a strong race to catch up and even set the fastest lap time of the race as he moved up to 15th, but then he ran wide and lost several places again. By the end he crossed the finish line in 19th place. Jonny was already in 8th place, but was taken by surprise at the restart and dropped back to 10th, where he had to fight off Petecof and Rasmussen, managing to defend his 10th place until the end. This also meant that he was 3rd in the Rookie classification. Axel dropped back at the start, but made up for his lost place with several overtaking manoeuvres, to finish an eventful race in 18th place. Emidio had to avoid an accident after the start and by charging through the gravel got his tyres dirty. This made it difficult to drive fast again immediately. He went off the track again, but then managed to bring the car home undamaged in 27th place. After the race Petecof was handed a 5 second penalty, which moved Jonny one place forward.

Race Two (30 minutes + 1 lap)
Sunday, 14/07/19, 10.35, Weather: Overcast, 17°C
Black clouds were building and the first raindrops started to fall, but the rain didn’t come. After the start there were more accidents and again the Safety Car was deployed. Unfortunately, Emidio was involved as well. His car was damaged and that unfortunately meant his race was over immediately. After the restart Giorgio was in 4th place, Jonny was 7th and Axel was 20th. The race was tough, and anyone who wanted to overtake had to take some big risks, because the track was very dirty off the ideal racing line. There was another accident towards the end of the race, and the Safety Car was deployed again. At the restart, Giorgio tried to attack for 3rd place, but he couldn’t make it stick. He went wide and dropped back to 8th. Jonny had to dodge an incident at the restart and was glad to get back onto the track again and to reach the finish line in 7th place. This meant that he was the best rookie in the race, and thus the winner of the rookie podium. Axel fought hard for positions throughout the race and managed to improve up to 16th.

Race Three (28 minutes + 1 lap)
Sunday, 14/07/19, 17.05, Weather: Overcast, 15°C
Black clouds started building up first, but then for the race the sun came out. Giorgio made a perfect start and immediately took the lead from 2nd position on the grid. He managed to drive fast immediately, so that Hauger and Aron, who tried to chase him down, were given no opportunity to attack him. Throughout the race, Giorgio was in control, and Hauger, who had also opened a small gap to the rest of the field, was never in a position to launch an attack. Giorgio drove hard to claim a great start to finish win. Jonny also managed a good start, then started overtaking but made contact with another car, running off track which cost him several places. During the race he made up a few positions and finally crossed the finish line in 14th place. Axel drove his best race this weekend and improved steadily. He took the chequered flag just in front of Jonny in 13th place. Emidio also managed to steadily improve his position during the race and finished in 25th place.
The fifth race meeting of the Italian Formula championship is scheduled after the summer break for the weekend of 1st September 2019 at Imola (I).
