The first of seven meetings in the Italian FIA Formula 4 Championship took place on the characterful track at Imola (I). With 33 competitors present for the meeting, their expectations were as high as could be ahead of the start.

Qualifying

Saturday, 07/05/22, 09.00 – 09.40, Weather: Wet, 13°C

The rules allow for two qualifying sessions of 15 minutes, with a 10-minute break in between. The Qualifying 1 times determine the grid for Race 1 and the times from Qualifying 2 determine the grid for Race 2. The starting order for Race 3 is based on the 2^nd best lap time of each driver in either of the two qualifying sessions.

Race One (30 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 07/05/22, 14.55, Weather: Overcast, 17°C

After the completely wet Friday, on which the free practice sessions took place, and the qualifying sessions on Saturday morning, when it was still wet and rain tyres were the better choice, it had now stayed dry until the first F4 race. This resulted in the big field of 33 race car to start on slick tyres for the first time this weekend. Alex Partyshev, who discovered Imola yesterday in free practice, got well under way. After only four test days in the new car he was ready to compete in his first race of the 2022 season. Ethan, who tackled his second race weekend in his still young single-seater career, also managed a good start. The safety car soon had to be deployed due to an accident. At the restart both our drivers improved their positions. They also avoided two other accidents and managed the respective restarts well. Alex drove a great race and had already moved up to 14^th place. In the very last lap of the race he launched a new attack. Unfortunately, things went wrong and Alex spun off onto the grass. He was still classified as 24^th. Ethan was not impressed by anything, drove a very good race and took the checkered flag in 15^th place.

Race Two (30 minutes + 1 lap)

Sunday, 08/05/22, 10.30, Weather: Cloudy, 17°C

On Sunday morning the sun shone through the clouds. Ethan got off to a good start and begun fighting for positions. Sometimes he advanced, but then he fell back again. He was ready at the safety car restart and was able to benefit. After 16 laps of intensive fighting, he reached the finish in 22^nd place. Alex had a good start but was soon pushed by another car and spun. He lost momentum and also several places. Alex started to work his way back up. In the end he reached the finish line in 26^th place after a challenging journey.

Race Three (28 minutes + 1 lap)

Sunday, 08/05/21, 17.30, Weather: Sunny, 20°C

The sun shone for the third race on Sunday afternoon. Alex started well and improved lap after lap. He moved up to 18th and held that position for long laps. There were a couple of accidents towards the end of the race and Alex could benefit from that. In the end he crossed the finish line in a good 14^th place. Ethan fell back a bit after the start. During the race he managed to make up several places and move up to 24^th place. On the final lap, two cars collided right in front of Ethan. He could not avoid a collision and was involved in the accident. Since this happened shortly before the end, he was still classified as 26^th.

The second race meeting of the Italian Formula championship is scheduled for the weekend of 5^th June in Misano (I).
