Frey with rookie podium in FWS F4 in Barcelona
The FWS F4 Spanish Winter Series was very well received this year, and a total of 38 drivers registered.
The fourth and last race weekend was held on the F1 GP Circuit at Barcelona. The weather was a mix of rain, clouds and shine.
Qualifying 1
Saturday, 09/03/24, 09.30 – 09.50, Weather: Rain, 10°C
In this championship there are several free practice sessions on Thursday and Friday, then two qualifying sessions of 20 minutes each, and a total of three races of 30 minutes + 1 lap each.
The starting grid for the first race will be created in the order of the fastest qualifying time from Q1. The starting grid for the second race will be based on the 2nd fastest time per driver from Q1. The starting grid for the third race will be drawn up in the order of each driver's best qualifying time from Q2.
It had been wet all morning, but just when the qualifying session was about to start a torrential downpour hit the circuit. The cars went out at green light, but it was only four minutes later that a car stranded in the gravel and the red flag came out. After some further inspection laps by the safety car the qualifying session 1 was abandoned.
Following the rules, the grid for the first race was now made up from the combined result of the official free practices. The last free practice session on Friday had been very much in favour of our drivers, who all had managed to shine. They were now able to profit from their efforts.

Race One (30 Min + 1 lap)
Saturday, 09/03/24, 14.45, Weather: Rain, 13°C
The start took place behind the safety car. Two laps were driven behind the safety car, then the red flag was shown and all vehicles drove back into the pit lane. After a few minutes, a message appeared that the race would not be started again.
After not completing two full race laps behind the safety car, the result was declared not valid for points and no points were awarded.

The second fastest time per driver in Qualification 2 was decisive for the starting grid for Race 2.
It had been raining in the night, and although the sun was shining this morning, it was still very cold. Plenty of cars choose to drive on wet weather tyres, also Arthur and Edouard, others choose slick tyres, as did Enea and Adam. For a long time wet weather tyres worked better, only towards the end of the session was it possible to go faster on slick tyres. However, three minutes before the end of the session, the red flag was shown due to an incident. This meant that the drivers only had one more lap to improve lap times when the session was restarted. Enea choose to change to wet weather tyres in the break. In the end Adam made it to 9th place, Enea was 10th, Arthur was 16th and Edouard 20th.

Race Two (30 Min + 1 lap)

Not long after the qualifying session, the “first” – in reality of course the second – race of the weekend started. Everyone had been waiting impatiently for the racing finally starting. But unfortunately Edouard was soon involved in an accident and the two vehicles went off the track. A third vehicle got stranded a few corners later and the safety car took over the field. Arthur was already 11th, Enea 24th and Adam 25th. At the restart Arthur held his place, but soon had to defend it strongly. In one corner, Bohra managed to overtake him, Arthur lost momentum and two other vehicles also went through. Arthur was now 15th. Enea and Adam had changed places and were briefly in contact at the restart. Adam was now 20th and Enea 21st. After another safety car phase, Arthur moved up to 14th place, Enea was now 18th and Adam 22nd. The race ended under the safety car after another incident. After the race, some drivers received a time penalty due to track limits. In the end, Arthur was classified 13th, Enea 18th and Adam 20th.

Race Three (30 Min + 1 lap)
Sunday, 10/03/24, 16.05, Weather: Sunny, 16°C
For the third race of this weekend, and the last of the FWS Formula Winter Series, two formation laps had to be driven because one vehicle stopped on the grid. Shortly after the start it was Edouard who was involved in an accident and then got stuck in the gravel trap. The safety car took over the field. There was a collision during the restart and the safety car was deployed immediately again. Now Adam was 7th, Enea 10th and Arthur 15th. But the beautiful positions were not to stay that way. Soon Adam was slowing and had to retire due to a technical problem. Arthur had a collision with another vehicle, and ended up in the gravel trap. The safety car was deployed again. Enea had now moved up to 7th place. After the restart there was still time for two laps of racing. After a few position changes, Enea managed to cross the finish line in great 7th place and thus as the 3rd placed rookie. The race ended well for at least one of our drivers!
