Alatalo with super finish in Monza
The FIA F3 Teams met up on the very fast Monza (I) circuit, as ever racing as one of the support races for the Formula 1 Gran Premio d’Italia 2022. This was their ninth outing in Europe supporting the 2022 Grand Prix Programme. The weather was still agreeably warm throughout the weekend. Competition was tough and everybody gave it their best shot to try and shine.
Qualifying
Friday, 09/09/22, 15.30 – 16.00, Weather: Sunny, 26°C
It had rained overnight and into the morning, meaning the 30 cars hit a damp track on Friday morning when the practice session got underway. As the sun began to shine over the temple of speed, we were finally able to mount slick tyres for the final 15 minutes of the session. Ido was 17th, while William had a slower start to the weekend and was 26th. Unfortunately, Federico reported a problem on his car and missed most of the practice. He was classified 30th.
Friday afternoon saw our drivers busy with the last Qualifying of the season. With the long straights of Monza, finding a good track position for a tow was crucial. After the first laps, William was in 14th position. Ido was also doing well in 17th place, while Federico was 27th. Halfway through the session, a red flag was brought out as one of the title contenders, Hadjar, ran wide through Parabolica and spun into the barriers. The track got cleaned and we got underway again for the final push laps. Qualifying in Monza is always a delicate situation, but William was able manage traffic well and to snatch a brilliant 7th place! It went a bit trickier for Ido and Federico who qualified 24th and 26th respectively. Everything was set for a thrilling last race weekend.

Race One (Sprint-Race, 40 Minutes)

The Sprint Race got underway on Saturday morning with William lined up in a great 6th position. Behind him, his teammates moved up some places on the grid following post-qualifying penalties. Ido was now starting in 20th place, while Federico was in 24th position. As usual, races in Monza are unpredictable and when the lights went out at the start, everyone went for all there was to get. William got off well and had kept his position after the first lap. It didn't go as well for Ido, who reported a puncture on his rear left tyre and had to come to the pitlane to get the tyre changed. The Israeli driver rejoined the race far behind the field. On his home soil, Federico knew very well that he had to stay out of trouble in Turn 1. Taking advantage of the slip stream, our Italian driver was able to move up several places and was up in 19th place after the first lap. On Lap 4, a Safety Car had to be deployed after a car had stopped at Turn 1. This allowed Ido to rejoin the field at the back. With 10 laps to go, the race finally was underway again. After a good start, William was now struggling to find his rhythm after the Safety Car went in. The Finnish-Ethiopian driver had to give in to some drivers who were very determined to make it to the front. William lost a few positions and eventually had to settle for 14th place at the chequered flag. On the other hand, Ido was on a mission to recover as many places as he possibly could. When the race restarted, Ido immediately began a great recovery race and managed to finish directly behind William, in 15th place. Federico was able to take advantage at the restart and made no mistakes as he steadily progressed to cross the finish line in 16th place, right behind his teammates.

Race Two (Feature Race, 45 Minutes)

The last race of the weekend got underway on a sunny Sunday morning. With the champion still to be crowned, expectations for this race were very high. When the lights went out at the start, William got well underway and kept up the speed with the front runners. Further back on the grid, both Ido and Federico managed good starts and were both making up positions. By the end of the first lap, the Safety Car had to be deployed to clean the track from an accident at Turn 6. When the race was restarted all our drivers were ready to give it all. Leclerc and Stanek were running straight at Turn 1 which opened the way for William to move up to 5th. Next on his target was Crawford. William didn’t hesitate long before he started his move even without the DRS enabled at the time and was now up in brilliant 4th position. William was on a great run and made no mistakes. He was entirely competitive in the tight group of the top four. Nose to tail with the drivers in front, both Ido and Federico were also battling it out for positions and were quickly finding their way up the order. Ido was fighting in 15th place, while Federico overtook Pizzi to take 19th position. This is when events took an unexpected twist. On lap 17, Maini and Benavides collided and soon the red flag was waved with 4 laps to go. The drivers made their way back to the fast lane in the pitlane, with William in 4th place, Ido in 12th position and Federico in 18th. With the drivers out of the cars and the teams waiting for instructions, we received a communication that the race wouldn't be resumed. Time penalties started to be applied due to track limits infringements and title contender Victor Martins was the first one to receive it - making our driver William move up to 3rd place! Unfortunately, minutes later William was also handed a time penalty and got moved back down to 7th place. When the final confirmation arrived, William was classified a still great 7th in the standings, with Ido in a superb 12th place and Federico in good 18th position.
The 2022 FIA F3 champion was finally crowned, his name was Victor Martins (F).

We are looking forward to the next season already, which will start for the FIA F3 Championship in March with the F1 race event at Sakhir, Bahrain.
