Alatalo in the top ten in the FIA F3 race event at Imola

The FIA F3 Championship competed for the first time this year at the Gran Premio dell'Emilia Romagna in the F1 program. Heavy rain made it difficult to cope with the powerful formula racing machines on the demanding track.

Race One Qualifying

Friday, 22/04/22, 15.55 – 16.25, Weather: Rain, 12°C

Rain fell heavily during Thursday night and it kept pouring during Friday morning when the practice session got underway. With very little visibility and no grip, the drivers got on track for what turned out to be a very challenging practice session. With 3 red flags interrupting the action and the rain falling, there was not much the drivers could do in this session, which actually served them to discover the track with the powerful FIA F3 cars for the first time. With a total of 7 laps completed Ido reached 9th best lap time, before he slipped off into the gravel bed. William was classified 15th and Federico 19th.
Luckily, it stopped raining during the afternoon and when qualifying got underway, track conditions improved quickly lap after lap. Still, the task was challenging as some parts of the circuit were still wet while other corners were dry. As usual, traffic played a big part as well. In an hectic qualifying session, Ido did a brilliant job taking 11th place, securing a front row start for Saturday’s sprint race. Unfortunately, William’s lap time got deleted due to track limits, which then brought him to 18th place. Federico had some bad luck with traffic and qualified 25th.

This season, two FIA F3 races are held per race weekend. The starting grid for race 1 (sprint race, 40 minutes) is based on the reversed 12 first positions of the qualifying session. Race 2 on Sunday (feature race, 45 minutes) takes place according to the exact result in qualifying.

Race One (Sprint-Race, 40 Minutes)

Saturday, 23/04/22, 10.35, Weather: Cloudy, 18°C

The sun was pleasantly shining over Imola on Saturday morning, when a very hectic and eventful sprint race took place. As the lights went out at the start, Ido lost a bit of momentum and dropped down to 6th position. He didn't give up and was fighting to gain the places back when a first safety car had to be deployed on lap 7. When the race resumed, disaster happened as Frederick came too optimistically from behind and, despite Ido's efforts to avoid contact, our driver got his front wing broken when the two touched. Ido had to come back to the pits to replace the parts, while the American driver was handed a penalty for his risky maneuver after the race. Ido took advantage of another safety car deployed when he was in the pits. He was able to rejoin the field, and at the end, the Israeli driver crossed the line in 22nd place.
From 18th place on the grid, William was in the battle for positions right from the start. With so many interruptions to the race, a steady improvement was very hard to achieve. The Finnish-Etiopian driver restarted well and at the end took 16th position.
Federico got away well at the start, immediately gaining two positions. He was fighting in the group when he got caught up in an accident not long after the first restart. As a result, the Italian driver found himself stuck in the gravel bed and a safety car had to be deployed again. Unfortunately, his race was over.

Race Two (Feature Race, 45 Minutes)

Sunday, 24/04/22, 08.50 Uhr, Weather: Cloudy, 12°C

On Sunday morning the track was still a bit damp. There were a few drivers who opted for wet weather tyres, but most had slick tyres fitted. Immediately after the start there were several accidents and the safety car took over the field. It wasn't long after the restart and there was another collision. The same thing was repeated again until after the third restart everybody in the field calmed down a bit and there were several consecutive race laps which were finally possible! Ido fell back a few places at first, but was able to work his way back up to 10th place. William also managed to stay on track and moved steadily up until 12th place. Federico managed to avoid any and to get past the accidents. After an eventful race, he finished in 21st place.
After the race there were various penalties. Ido also received one for exceeding the track limits. This ultimately moved William up to 10th place and Ido down to 13th place.
