Qualifying

Friday, 15/07/16, 17.30 – 18.10, Weather: Sunny, 23°C

The new rules allow for two qualifying sessions of 15 minutes, with a 10 minute break in between. The Qualifying 1 times determine the grid for Race 1 and the times from Qualifying 2 determine the grid for Race 2. The starting order for Race 3 is based on the results of Race 2, but with the top ten reversed.

After one wet and one dry free practice session in the morning, the two qualifying sessions were held at the end of the afternoon in what were very agreeable temperatures. The two sessions were held with just a 10 minute break between them and the competition was very strong with lap times very close throughout the large field.

Race One (28 minutes + 1 lap)

Saturday, 16/07/16, 13.55, Weather: Sunny, 26°C

Marcos made a good start and held onto 4th place despite everybody pushing to the front at once. The order was soon Correa, Schumacher, Guzman and Siebert. Marcos piled the pressure on Guzman for lap after lap, and tried several moves but Guzman didn’t leave the door open. When Marcos again tried a move on the straight, Guzman slammed the door, causing Marcos to go off track and hitting one of the pit lane exit markers, taking off his front wing in the process. That rendered his car uncompetitive and he limped back to the pit lane. Because there was more damage Marcos had to retire from the race. Job was in 13th at the end of the first lap but the tough fighting saw him lose a place to Fernandez. However towards the end of the race Job put in a charge that saw a well executed overtaking manoeuvre each lap which meant he crossed the finish line in an excellent 10th place! Diego moved forward at the start and was soon up in 15th place in the same fighting cluster as Job and Kevin. His attempts to improve further saw him spin off the track and get stuck in the gravel trap, bringing his race to an unfortunate end. Kevin was pushed off early on and dropped back to 16th but put in a good fight back to regain ground with some very nifty overtaking manoeuvres. He made steady progress to finish in a very good 13th place. Giacomo also started well and was able to improve steadily, making up several places and to take the chequered flag in 25th position.

Race Two (28 minutes + 1 lap)

Sunday, 17/07/16, 11.00, Weather: Sunny, 25°C

The race was started as scheduled at 09.00 but Vieira failed to get away and Conwright and Lavignia crashed heavily into the stalled car. It was sheer luck that Giacomo just managed to avoid the havoc and only picked up minor damage from kissing the pit wall. The race was stopped immediately, and a new start was scheduled for 11.00. Fortunately all three drivers escaped injury.
The new start went well but on lap two Schumacher and Correa touched and both spun off which meant the Safety Car had to be deployed. Marcos was in 5th, Job 6th, Diego 14th, Kevin 18th and Giacomo 25th. At the restart there was much jockeying for position and for several laps the fight was intense. Marcos, who attacked Guzman repeatedly, probably stressed his tyres too much because he ended up losing several positions to finally settle in 8th. Job, who also had been battling hard, had much the same happen and fell back to 9th. Diego was doing very well, gaining a place to go 13th. Kevin set a good pace and held 18th place for the duration of the race. Giacomo, who was in 25th, spun after the restart but was able to continue with the loss of a handful of positions. Two minutes before the end of the race Gonzales went off and with his car needing to be towed away the Safety Car had to be redeployed. After the remaining time had elapsed the race was red flagged. That meant Marcos took the flag in 8th, Job was 9th, Diego 13th, Kevin 18th and Giacomo 27th.

Race Two Results

Race Three (18 minutes + 1 lap)

Sunday, 17/07/2016, 17.20, Weather: Sunny, 28°C

As ever the Sprint Race was run at the end of Sunday afternoon. Marcos made the best possible start from 3rd straight into the lead. He set a blistering pace and was able to build a small gap to Shlom. Job, for his part, tangled slightly with Ye and ended up dropping to 4th. He then had a tense battle with Vips but eventually had to cede the place. When Ye went off briefly Job got his 4th place back and this time was able to hang onto this excellent position all the way to the finish line. Diego was in trouble at the start and lost several places finding himself behind Kevin once again, Kevin having made a good start. They spent much of the race in a midfield melee with Raucci and Maini which saw Kevin come home in 17th just ahead of Diego who was 18th. Giacomo first fell back and then recovered to claim 27th place. Marcos drove a strong, error-free race to hold onto his advantage all the way to the end to bring home the victory.

The next race of the Italian F4 Championship will take place in eight weeks time on the weekend of 11th September at Vallelunga (I).
