Good start but no result in Zandvoort

The 2022 FIA F3 met up for their eight race event of a total of nine as part of the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix 2022 program on the special Zandvoort (NL) circuit. The circuit is embedded in dunes near the North Sea beach and has sloping curves, which makes it very demanding. Fortunately, the weather here turned out to be friendly and warm, and the amount of spectators was spectacular.

Qualifying

Friday, 02/09/22, 14.00 – 14.30, Weather: Sunny, 23°C

Keen to get his first laps on this track under the belt, Federico headed out as soon as the practice session got underway - followed not much later by the rest of the field. Despite two virtual safety car phases, one of which just in the final minutes of the session, our drivers managed to complete their laps and get some impressions of the spectacular and technical Zandvoort circuit. At the end of the session, William was 10th, Ido 13th and Federico 28th.
At the start of the afternoon, the cars lined up again to get the qualifying session underway. Set to complete their runs as planned, traffic got in the way of the strategy and finding a good spot for the push laps was very tricky. In the first run, William managed to place himself in a brilliant 11th place, with Ido in 24th and Federico in 25th position. Unfortunately, after that things didn’t go smoothly. Especially for William who, with one minute left on the clock, lost control of the car during his final attempt and hit the barriers at Turn 3, bringing the qualifying to an early end. The red flag came out and the session was not resumed. William was unhurt, but had not been able to improve his lap time. His position in the end was 22nd place. Ido was 25th and Federico 28th.

Race One (Sprint-Race, 40 Minutes)

Saturday, 03/09/22, 10.25, Weather: Sunny, 20°C

On Saturday morning, under a bright sunny sky, the sprint race got underway. From 28th on the grid and racing for the first time in Zandvoort, Federico made a good start. Already in the first sequence of corners, the Italian driver managed to stay out of trouble and found his way up to 24th place. Zandvoort is known to be a circuit where overtaking is very hard. Federico then did not take any risk and was managing his tyres until the chequered flag was waved, crossing the finish line in 24th position. Unfortunately, a dramatic race was upon Ido and William. Both our drivers got off well at the start but they quickly got caught up in the first lap chaos. With a damaged front wing and a puncture, Ido couldn't avoid making a slight contact with William. As a consequence, William also reported a puncture and both our drivers had to drive back to the pitlane for a quick parts and tyre change. Ido and William rejoined the race behind the field and after that, there wasn't much to do for them but to hold on until the end. Ido finished the race in 29th place, followed by William in 30th position.

Race Two (Feature Race, 45 Minutes)

Sunday, 04/09/22, 08.45, Weather: Sunny, 18°C

The feature race took place early on Sunday morning. From 22nd on the grid, William was looking forward to a better race in Zandvoort but luck was not with him this weekend. He made a good start and was in a good rhythm already after the first few corners. Our Finnish-Ethiopian driver overtook Pizzi and Villagomez to snatch 21st place already by the end of the opening laps and was now targeting Benavides. That is when disaster happened. William made a successful move on Benavides, but the Carlin driver then bumped into him at the entry to the following corner which sent both cars in the gravel and into the barriers. William's race was unfortunately over and his car badly damaged. Ido started the race in 25th place and managed to keep it clean throughout the whole race and the multiple safety car restarts. Showing some nice moves, our Israeli driver managed to recover 6 places and crossed the line in a positive 19th position. Federico got away well at the start and held his position in the opening laps. Just as Ido, our Italian driver stayed out of trouble and took advantage of the chaos in front to move up some places. Federico took 23rd at the chequered flag.
