Alatalo with strong races in Barcelona

The FIA F3 Championship held the third racing event of the season in Barcelona in the FIA F1 program of the Gran Premio de Espana 2022. It was immediately apparent how close the top-class, 30-vehicle field was.

Qualifying

Friday, 20/05/22, 15.30 – 16.00, Weather: Sunny, 23°C

On Friday morning, with slightly cooler temperatures, the weekend got underway with the drivers heading out for the practice session. Not much action happened in the first part of the session and it was only with 20 minutes left on the clock that some competitive times were set. Our drivers were classified as follows: Ido 17th, Federico 23rd and William 26th.
Qualifying began not much later, in the afternoon heat. As usual, traffic plays a big part in qualifying and with track temperatures reaching 48 degrees, the conditions were really challenging. Despite losing momentum in the first runs, William managed to marginally improve his position and qualified 21rd. A demanding session saw Ido qualifying 25th. After a rather good first run, Federico was in 17th place. Improving was very tricky and despite a good lap, the Italian driver ended up 27th.

Race One (Sprint-Race, 40 Minutes)

Saturday, 21/05/22, 11.00, Weather: Sunny, 27°C

When the lights went out at the start, William made a good getaway as the field headed for the first corner safely. By the end of the first lap, the Finnish - Etiopian driver was already in 19th place. With air temperature hitting 29 degrees, tyre management was crucial. William worked his pace through the race and, taking advantage of some situations in front of him, he gained more spots to finish the race in 15th position. From 26th place on the grid, Federico put in a battling performance and immediately moved up several positions. By the end of the first lap, the Italian driver was already up to 22nd place. Federico then managed his tyres well and resisted Ido's attempts to overtake him, eventually crossing the line in 19th place. Ido started from 24th place and held on to that position after the opening lap. The Israeli driver was up to 20th place and was trying to put pressure on Federico when he lost momentum due to avoiding an incident. With less than 5 laps to go, Ido dropped down a few places but then managed his race until the chequered flag, taking 23rd place at the end.

On Sunday morning, the 30 drivers met on the grid for the last race of the weekend. Starting from the 20th place, William managed a good start and after the first laps he was already up to 18th place. Taking advantage of some situations in front of him, William made up some more places and was now running in 15th place. William then worked his pace through the race, restarted well after the two safety car phases and left the best for the final stages of the race when with some nice moves he powered past different drivers to cross the line in 12th place. Ido had a good start and after the opening laps he was up to 22nd place. Ido then progressed steadily through the race, managed the two restarts well and finished the race in 17th position. Federico took the start from the 26th spot on the grid and had a good getaway, immediately moving up to 25th.
