Missed chance at Monza

The GP3 Series met up at the very fast Monza (I) circuit, as ever racing as one of the support races for the Formula 1 Gran Premio d’Italia 2018. This was their sixth outing in Europe supporting the 2018 Grand Prix Programme. At the start the weather was still agreeably warm, but then heavy rain changed the schedule completely. Competition was tough and everybody gave it their best shot to try and shine.

Race One Qualifying

Friday, 31/08/18, 17.50 – 18.35, Weather: Overcast, 17°C

Normally free practice takes place on Friday morning, but shortly before the session a heavy thunderstorm hit the area, resulting in too much standing water on the surface and free practice was cancelled. The strict Formula 1 schedule does not allow for major changes and so, after the weather calmed down, the GP3 Series was given a 10-minute free practice session just before their qualifying session. The track was dry and Tatiana, putting in a determined drive, set the fastest time of all. Juan Manuel was 8th, and Jannes was 14th.
Immediately afterwards qualifying started. Juan Manuel finished a great 4th and with a gap of only 0.374s Tatiana was 8th. Jannes put in a strong drive and finished 13th.
However, at scrutineering afterwards Janne’s car didn’t have enough fuel in, and he was disqualified from qualifying. Because free practice and qualifying went absolutely smoothly, the fuel consumption was higher than expected, which meant that Jannes would start the first race from last on the grid.

Race One (40 Minutes)

Saturday, 01/09/18, 10.30, Weather: Rain, 17°C

On Saturday morning it rained lightly non-stop. The track was wet at the beginning of the race, but it became increasingly drier towards the end. Everyone started on rain tyres, and Tatiana managed a fierce start, which swa her fetch up right behind Juan Manuel. The two were in 4th and 5th places respectively, but Tatiana wanted more. Unfortunately, she hit Juan Manuel when she tried to challenge him for his place. This caused Juan Manuel to spin and he dropped to the back of the field. This was a shame because from what was looking like a top-level result for both Juan Manuel and Tatiana there was now nothing to show! Tatiana kept pace with the leaders for the first half of the race until the track started to get faster. With her nose and front wing slightly damaged by her actions, she fell back steadily, taking the chequered flag in 15th place. After his spin, Juan Manuel ran at the back of the field for a few laps before he decided to pit for slick tyres. After that he set some very fast lap times over the remainder of the race, but the gap to the rest of the field was too big for him to gain any places. Jannes had steadily improved and reached the finish in 16th place. Juan Manuel was 17th.

The grid for the second race of the weekend was set by reversing the order of the first eight finishers in the first race, with the rest of the places set according to the finishing order in the first race.

Race Two (30 Minutes)

Sunday, 02/09/18, 09.40, Weather: Cloudy, 17°C

The track was dry for the second race. Juan Manuel immediately tried to make up some places, but DeFrancesco drove into him, forcing him onto the wet grass, where it was difficult to steer. From there he crashed into the barrier and then collided with Aubry, triggering a safety car phase. The race was over for both of them and the badly damaged cars had to be cleared away. DeFrancesco was awarded a penalty for his actions after the race, but this didn’t help Juan Manuel or Aubry. At the restart Tatiana was already 13th and Jannes was 16th. Tatiana managed to improve her position steadily as the race went on, putting in a strong performance and passing car after car as she worked her way up to 8th. That meant she secured the last available point of this race. Jannes held his position for a long time until he felt more confident and he managed to improve his position to finish 14th.
After the race Ilott and Hubert were both disqualified from the race, as scrutineering revealed that their tyre pressures were too low. That moved Tatiana and Jannes up two places each, with Tatiana collecting 4 points for 6th place.

Monza was the last event this season in Europe. For the next race event, which takes place on the weekend of September 30th, the GP3 teams will head to Sochi, in Russia.
