JENZER MOTORSPORT 2018:
Tatiana Calderon (COL), Juan Manuel Correa (USA) and Jannes Fittje (D)

Correa and Calderon strong at the Hungaroring

The GP3 Series met up for their fifth race event on the fluid and demanding Hungaroring Circuit near Budapest, racing as one of the support races for the Formula 1 ING Magyar Nagydij 2018. The temperatures were high, and the drivers faced major challenges in terms of tyre management and track limit observation.

Race One Qualifying

Saturday, 28/07/18, 10.45 – 11.15, Weather: Sunny, 27°C

The free practice session was run on Friday morning. Jannes Fittje, who replaces David Beckmann in our team from this race onwards, was discovering the powerful and fast GP3 Series car. He managed to improve steadily and to build up his confidence, and finished 17th. Tatiana reached an excellent 7th place and Juan Manuel was 11th.
The qualifying session on Saturday morning started well. Tatiana and Juan Manuel were running in the Top Ten and Jannes gave his best as well. After the pit stops and with new tyres the chase for lap times started anew, and Juan Manuel set a number of great fast sector times, but then lost too much in the last sector on his fastest lap. Instead of ending up in the top three, he was 10th at the end of the session. Tatiana fared similarly, and was 15th in the end. Jannes claimed 17th place in his first qualifying session in this series.

Race One (40 Minutes)

Saturday, 28/07/18, 18.30, Weather: Sunny, 27°C

On Saturday afternoon a violent thunderstorm hit the circuit, but with the high temperature and enough wind, the track was practically dry by the time the GP3 race began. Juan Manuel made a good start and held onto 10th, while Tatiana advanced to 13th, and Jannes was 17th. After a few laps, the order settled and, as no one was allowed to use DRS for a while, everyone was busy trying to preserve their tyres. When the DRS was activated again from the middle of the race many overtaking manoeuvres were attempted on the fluid course. Juan Manuel moved up to 7th, and Tatiana improved to 10th. She now had a close up view of the fierce fight between Boccolacci and Menchaca, and sat back waiting for an opportunity to get past the two of them. However, her tyres started to degrade, making it possible for Aubry to overtake her on the very last lap, which meant Tatiana crossed the finish line in 11th place. Jannes kept the pace up very well and attacked Piquet on the final laps to come home to a very good 13th place in his first ever GP3 race. Juan Manuel achieved his second best result of the season with 7th place.

The grid for the second race of the weekend was set by reversing the order of the first eight finishers in the first race, with the rest of the places set according to the finishing order in the first race.

Race Two (30 Minutes)

Sunday, 29/07/18, 10.05, Weather: Sunny, 30°C

At 10 o'clock in the morning the thermometer was already reading 30°C. Juan Manuel made a good start, and ran side by side with Boccolacci, but as they reached the first corner, Ilott and Hubert also attacked, and Juan Manuel dropped back to 4th place. Pulcini was also in pursuit of the top slot, and with the help of the DRS he was able to get past Juan Manuel. Juan Manuel, however, managed to hang onto the back of the leading pack and so established himself in 5th place. He drove a great race, made no mistakes and took an excellent 5th place at the finish. Tatiana made up two places at the start and was 9th, and closed in on Menchaca with intent to achieve what she had had in mind to do yesterday. Today she achieved it and got past in a determined move, quickly closing in on Beckmann. However, there was not enough time left for another attack. With 8th place Tatiana celebrated her best result this season and scored some well-deserved first points of the season. Jannes was involved in an accident after the start but made it back to the pitlane, then rejoined the race and gained more valuable driving experience. He finished in 17th place.

We look forward to the next race, which takes place in four weeks’ time, on the weekend of August 26th, 2018, at Spa-Francorchamps.
