No luck for Beckmann at the RedBull Ring

The GP3 Series teams met up for the third event of the season as they ran as part of the Formula One programme at the Grosser Preis von Oesterreich 2018, held at the spectacular RedBull Ring Circuit. It was very obvious after Free Practice and Qualifying just how close the competition is within the highly competitive GP3 Series field. All 20 drivers were within 0.9 hundredths of a second of the best time.

Race One Qualifying

Friday, 29/06/18, 17.50 – 18.20, Weather: Sunny, 20°C

At the start of free practice the track was still partly damp from overnight rain. The track dried quickly, although a short shower towards the end of the session caused a certain amount of confusion. Our drivers did their best despite the conditions and ended the session in 11th (David), 14th (Juan Manuel) and 20th (Tatiana).

A big black cloud hovered overhead, but it stayed dry throughout the qualifying session. It was all going according to plan, when the session had to be red flagged 2 minutes early. Another two laps should have been possible, and everyone was just preparing for their fastest laps. Juan Manuel had done a purple first sector, and Tatiana and David were also setting very good sector times, but it was all in vain when the session came to an end prematurely. All the drivers were again within 0.9 second of the fastest time.

Race One (40 Minutes)

Saturday, 30/06/18, 10.25, Weather: Cloudy, 19°C

At the start of the first race the track was dry and the sun shone through the clouds. Juan Manuel got away well and was 8th by the end of the first lap. Meanwhile David had also moved up to 10th, and Tatiana was 17th. Mawson was unlucky to end up stranded on the track and the Safety Car had to take over. At the restart, Juan Manuel and David both gained a place to go 7th and 9th, while Tatiana held onto 17th. DRS was finally enabled on lap 6, after which attacks were frequent. This track offers some good opportunities to overtake, and this was put to extensive use. Alesi put pressure on Juan Manuel, and shortly after managed to get past, after which Championship leader Hubert charged up from behind, getting into a massive scrap with David and Juan Manuel. Hubert made a lunge for it, clashing with Juan Manuel, while Mazepin, who thought he'd seen his chance, slammed sideways into Hubert. Juan Manuel had a flat rear tyre and made it back to the pits, returning to the race after his tyre change. David, on the other hand, survived the hairy situation well and was now in the coveted 8th place that would give whoever had it pole for Race 2. He was soon under attack from Laaksonen, the two changing places over several laps in a thrilling fight for the place. In the end, David prevailed and came home in 8th place after a super race. That secured him pole position for the second race! Tatiana also had an eventful race, steadily improving her position, making no mistakes and finishing in 12th place. Juan Manuel finished 19th.

The grid for the second race of the weekend was set by reversing the order of the first eight finishers in the first race, with the rest of the places set according to finishing order in the first race.

Race Two (30 Minutes)

Sunday, 01/07/18, 09.45, Weather: Sunny, 17°C

The sun was shining and everybody was waiting eagerly for the start, but in the first few meters of the race, Tveter tried to push David over from the right, while Alesi tried the same from the left. The three touched and collectively flew off into the run-off zone. This was a pity, as the race was over for all three drivers, and the Virtual Safety Car had to be deployed briefly. Tatiana was now 9th and Juan Manuel was 11th. As soon as the DRS was enabled, a tough fight developed between Tatiana and Hubert, who was trying to make up places. He overtook Tatiana, but Tatiana bravely took the place back in one of the following corners. Several laps later Hubert made it past her again, leaving Tatiana in 10th but driving very well. She stayed with Hubert and Kari, but then she was very unlucky. A tear off visor from another driver wrapped round her oil cooler, causing the oil temperature to rise critically. She lost momentum and was unable to defend her place against Mawson and later against DeFrancesco. She crossed the line in 12th place instead of in the points. Juan Manuel moved up from 19th and took the flag just behind Tatiana in 13th place.

We are looking forward to the next race, which will be the third weekend event in a row, in just one week’s time at Silverstone in England.
